Small black cross on a heel
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small black cross is tattooed on the heel of a bare foot, set slightly off centre towards the inner side. The cross has a plain vertical and horizontal line in solid black ink with no shading. The skin is lit by a bright flash, and the rest of the foot and a dark sock or shoe edge fill the frame.

Sit you down on that upturned bucket, and mind the rhubarb, it bites. My grandmother's garden ran down to the beck at Scarrow, and the path to the gate was laid with flat grey flags her father hauled up from the quarry. Every one was the same save the seventh from the gate, which had a cross pecked into its middle with a cold chisel. Two strokes, no fancy work.

Why? Because the widow Hebden kept bees, and the bees would not settle on a hive whose path ran straight to the house without a mark. That's what folk said, and nobody argued with bees. So each morning she stepped on that flag on her way to the skeps, and each morning the sun came off the water and struck the cross so bright it looked like a little window set in the stone.
The year of the flood, the beck took the wall, the gate and most of the garden. When the men came to clear it they found the seventh flag turned face down in the silt, and nobody could lift it alone. They levered it over with a crowbar, and there was the cross, cut clean, not a grain of mud in the lines. Her son swore he'd never dug it. The widow only said she'd known it would come up to meet her.
So when you walk the lane tomorrow, step where the plain flags are and keep a thumb's width off the cracked one by the wall. The bees will know you've been, and so will I.
