Don't look at the clock, love. Look at the bench. Dorothy Fenwick came up the lane in January with a tin of bulbs and a watch that had stopped at twenty past four, and she asked me to make a rose come out of that tin before the thaw. I told her roses don't keep to clocks. She said hers did.

We set the bulbs in grit in the old glasshouse at Hollin Bank, where the paraffin heater ticks and the frost sits on the panes like salt. Every morning she wound the watch and held it up to the glass, and every morning the hands had moved a minute less than she expected, as if time were being pinched off somewhere between the winding and the bench. I didn't say so. I just kept the water warm.

By February the first shoot came, red-brown and furred, then the leaves, dark as wet slate and veined like an old map. The bloom opened on a Tuesday, one petal at a time, and the watch on her wrist stopped dead with the glass fogged from inside. She laughed and said the rose had taken its wages early, and she went down the lane without her tin.

I still have that tin. Inside the lid someone scratched a single word in a careful hand: enough. For years I took it for a grievance. Now I think it was a receipt.
