Rose and dotwork hand on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large rose with layered petals and leaves sits above a stippled hand rising from a scalloped cuff, with a single leaf beside the hand. The hand and rose are shaded with dense dots, while the leaves and petal edges use solid black and bold outlines. The tattoo is entirely black and grey on pale skin against a dark background.

Hush now, and mind the lamp, because this is the part the sellers never tell the children. On Lantern Row, where the cobbles dip toward the canal, there lived a glover called Anselm Crowe who sewed gloves for the dead and the rich. When his wife drowned in the cut, he stitched her a glove too, a long one with a scalloped cuff like a cockle shell, and he buried it empty. Three nights later a hand came up through the stones in front of his shop, pale as candle wax, fingers lifted as if to take a coin.

Nobody would touch it. The fishwives crossed themselves and the constable dropped a barrel over it, but the barrel was gone by morning and the hand was still there, reaching at the height of a man's elbow. Then Lottie Pask, who was nine and had no sense, came with a single red rose she had stolen from the churchyard wall and laid it in the open palm. The stem slipped down between the stones. By Sunday a bush was growing beside the hand, its leaves dark as ink, and the hand had never once closed.

Here is what the old ones knew. A hand that reaches is not asking for the thing it reaches for. It is asking whether anyone will stop. Anselm came out at last with his awl and his thread, sat on the step all night, and when the bells struck four he took the cuff in his own fingers and held on. The rose opened. Its petals fell on the wet stone, and the hand closed around nothing at all, gently, the way you would hold a sleeping child's hand.

Ask anyone on Lantern Row where the glover went and they will point at the bush. One dark leaf is still caught on the cuff, where the stone has worn smooth. Walk past at dusk and you may see a hand rising to meet yours. Don't take it. Just nod, and keep walking, because it has waited a long time for someone to stop.
