Rose and foliage tattoos on both thighs
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the lower body of a person wearing a white layered skirt against a dark background, with tattoos on both thighs. The right thigh carries a large shaded rose with smaller roses and leaves beneath it, while the left thigh has dark, fern-like foliage with fine branching stems. The black and grey work uses soft shading and dense dark areas, and the monochrome image gives the design a strong contrast.

The head gardener at Hollin Court had told you twice that the Lady Anne rose would never take against a northern wall, and twice you had carried her cuttings in from the frame anyway, wrapped in wet sacking in the pocket of your apron. Mr Pell called her a sulky thing. You called her patient. Nobody else in the walled garden had the knack of getting a bloom out of that stubborn wood, and by June the buds were the size of walnuts, tight as unread letters.

Beyond the old well-head, where the sun gave up before noon, the ferns had spread across the flags. You had cleared them every spring for three summers, and every spring they came back finer, their fronds splitting into branches as thin as the veins of a leaf held up to a lamp. Mrs Okafor, who kept the glasshouses, said they were the only things at Hollin that did exactly what they were asked, which was to grow in the dark and ask nothing of anybody.
On the Friday before the flower show, a heatwave came up the valley like a hand over the lawn. The Lady Anne's leaves curled at the edges by noon. You stood at the rose bed with a watering can you could barely lift, and then you noticed the ferns had crept across the gravel overnight, their shadow lying over the bed like a sheet pulled up to the chin. The soil beneath was cool. The rose had been standing in the only shade in the garden the heat had not reached.
Mr Pell took the prize cup that year for dahlias. You did not go to the marquee. On Monday morning you found the Lady Anne open in full, every petal flat and blown, the ferns still lying over the gravel like a dropped shawl, and you sat down on the bench beside them with your hands empty and let the bloom have the whole garden.
