Blue butterfly on top of foot
Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo
A close photograph of a foot wearing pink suede peep-toe platform heels, with a blue butterfly tattoo on the top of the foot. The butterfly has soft grey and black shading along the wing edges and veins, giving it a three-dimensional look. The blue ink stands out against the skin tone, and the shoes and wooden floor fill the rest of the frame.

Dear Nell, you'll not believe what flew through the shop door on Tuesday. I had it propped open against the heat, and a butterfly came in as bold as a bailiff, as big as my palm and blue as a gas flame. It went straight for the pink suede peep-toes Mrs Harrow left for the Whitsun dance. Those platforms have sat on my bench a fortnight waiting for new lifts. The thing settled on the instep and wouldn't be shifted, so I stood there with my tin of tacks like a fool.

I didn't dare breathe. When it finally opened and closed its wings, I saw the blue was sewn through with dark grey, like rain coming over the moor. I fetched the box of silk offcuts you sent me at Christmas, the ones from the Lewis's remnant bin, and found a piece near enough the same shade. I cut it to the shape of a wing, pinned it to the strap with my mouth full of pins, and stitched the veins in charcoal thread while the butterfly sat perfectly still, as though it had been asked to model.
When I'd finished, it lifted off and went out past the sign for the Co-op, over the wall and away towards the reservoir. I told myself it had only come in for the warmth. Mrs Harrow collects on Saturday. She'll have her shoes back with a blue wing on the strap, and she can make of it what she likes.
Write soon and tell me Mother's chest is better. The kettle's on, and there's a bit of Madeira cake under the cloth if you want to come and see for yourself. Your loving sister, Dot.
