Grateful script tattoo on the top of a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests against a white surface, showing a single word, Grateful, written in thin black script down the outer top of the foot. The linework is fine and even, with a small looping flourish beneath the lettering. The ink is black on pale skin, and the red toenail polish is the only other strong colour in the frame.

Dear Nan,

The frost has got into the lower field again and Dad says the ewes will lamb early if this cold holds, so I am writing this at the kitchen table with my boots still steaming by the range. You will want to know that the new gate is hung properly now. Tom from the chapel came up with his brother's van on Saturday and between us we got the post in before dark, though I put my thumb through the knuckle doing it and you would have laughed at the language.
I keep thinking about the morning you showed me how to write a proper word on the back of an envelope, the way you did it with the loops that never quite joined. You said a word wants room to breathe. I have been practising it in the margins of the feed book, all those little tilts and tails, and last week Mrs Ellery asked whether I had copied it off a card. I told her no, that it was yours.
So I went into Hexham on Thursday and had it done on the top of my foot, where I will see it each time I pull my wellingtons on. It stung like a wasp and the man was kind about it. It says what you always said at the end of every letter, which I have never once managed to write back to you without sounding daft. It is there now, going down the bone where the snow can't reach it.
The lambing will start in a week or two. I will send word the minute the first one is up on its feet.
With love, as ever, Jess
