Rose and skull on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic black and grey tattoo on the forearm shows a full-blown rose whose petals form the upper part of a skull, with the teeth and jaw at the lower edge. Soft shading and fine gradations create depth across the petals, and small leaves sit at the lower right. The photo is taken close up with the subject's torso and a light t-shirt visible at the left edge.

I had worked the lost property hatch at Millbrook Junction for eleven years when the first petals turned up. Not a whole rose, just three, dark as burnt paper, tucked inside a left-luggage envelope that someone had pushed through the slot marked Unclaimed.

Mrs Pryce, who ran the buffet next door, said it was a message from the dead, which was rubbish, but she said it with such relish that I stopped laughing at her. I kept the petals in a biscuit tin under the counter. Each morning there was one more, always laid on the ledge facing the departure boards, as if someone wanted the trains to see them.
In March a man in a grey coat asked me about a holdall. He had a bruise across the back of one hand and a habit of looking past my shoulder at the clock. I didn't have his bag, and I told him so, and he thanked me as though I'd done him a kindness. The next morning the petals stopped. In their place lay a torn ticket for the 17.52 to Carlisle, a train that had not run that day because of a fallen wire outside Preston.
I still don't know who left them. What I know is that the tin is full now, and the last bloom I found was pressed flat in the lid, its edges curled into something close to a grin. I keep the lid shut and let the trains go by.
