Rose bouquet on upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A bouquet of two open roses with a smaller bloom, leaves and trailing sprigs forms a compact, triangular cluster. The design is drawn in fine black linework with light hatching and shading that gives the petals and foliage depth. It is shown in black and grey against pale skin, centred on the upper back with the head and hair visible at the top of the frame.

The cook aboard the Marigold Quay had been told to throw the wilting roses over the side, but Tamsin Oddie would not let him. She had carried the bouquet from Lisbon in a jam jar wrapped in wet flannel, and it had outlived two storms, a scurvy scare and the captain's temper.

Each night the bloom nearest the lantern opened a little wider. The men said the roses were listening. Old Ned swore that when the ship lay becalmed for nine days off the Azores, the larger rose turned its face towards the north-west, the way a compass needle does, and held there until the wind came back out of that quarter.
On the tenth morning Tamsin wrapped the stems in oilcloth, tied on a sprig of thyme for her brother's grave at Penzance, and climbed the mainmast with the bouquet in her teeth. She was no fool. She knew the rigging was rotten at the crosstrees. She went up anyway, because the roses had kept the ship's course true, and a debt of that size wants paying in person.
Ned said afterwards that the wind came round before she reached the top, and that the bouquet fell into the sea as neat as a bride's posy, drifting west towards the sun. Nobody on the Marigold Quay ever saw her come down. The jam jar, though, was found dry and upright in the galley, and the cook never threw anything away again.
