Black and grey peony on the shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A large peony bloom fills the upper chest and shoulder, drawn with a heavy black outline and layered petals. The petals are shaded in soft greys that build depth and volume toward the centre of the flower. The ink is black and grey only, and the bloom is shown against bare skin with a blurred beach and trees behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Frost lay on the peony beds at Hollins Farm like a dusting of flour, and Maud Preece had been out since five breaking the ice on the water troughs. The bushes were cut down to red-brown stubs, their roots packed under straw. Her brother had said to leave them until March. She went anyway, kneeling where the wind had blown the straw back, because her father always said a peony shows you its weight before it shows its colour.

In the corner under the hedge, one bud had pushed through the thatch. It was not green. It had gone the colour of wet slate, its petals folded tight and ruffled at the edges, layer upon layer like pages pressed flat in a ledger. She had never heard of a bud coming up in January. She thought of the seed merchant in Cambridge who had sent the last order back with a note saying the variety was finished, and of the cheque she still owed him.

She cut it with the bread knife because the secateurs were in the shed, and carried it into the kitchen in a jam jar of cold water. By the range it opened slowly, the dark centre spilling outward into soft pewter, deeper where the petals curled under themselves. Steam from the kettle fogged the window, and the fields beyond went white and blank.

She took a stub of charcoal from the drawer and drew the bloom twice on the back of the unpaid invoice, pressing hard at the outline and lighter as the petals turned away. Then she wrote one line beneath it, Still flowering in January, send the money or send the seed, signed it with her father's initials, and sealed the envelope before the bud had time to close.
