A red rose bud with a skull shaded within its petals dominates the design, outlined in heavy black linework. Olive-green and grey leaves, a thorned stem and smooth shading sit around the bud. The frost came to Hadleigh Common two nights before the Michaelmas fair, and by Thursday Teddy Marr's rosebuds had gone the colour of old wine. He sold them anyway from the tailboard of his cart, wrapped in damp newspaper, three for a penny to anyone too shy to buy a ribbon from the girl on the swingboats. His niece Lottie sat on an upturned crate and stripped the thorns with a hairpin, counting coppers into a biscuit tin that had once held her grandmother's buttons.

It was Lottie who found the bud that wasn't a rose at all. Its petals were dark and heavy, and when she eased the outer red back with her thumb, something pale looked up at her from the middle, hollow-eyed and grinning, shaded in the same soft smoke as the leaves. 'Who painted that?' she asked. Teddy didn't answer straight away. He was watching the lane, where a man in a grey overcoat had stopped beside the candyfloss stall and was studying the cart the way a farmer studies a sky.

The man bought the bud for a sixpence, which was far too much, and held it up to the lamp as if reading a letter. 'My sister used to say the skull was the only honest thing in any garden,' he said, and tucked it into his buttonhole. Teddy said nothing. He had cut a hundred buds with that same knife before dawn, and every one of them had opened on the cold ground with nothing inside but rain.

When the fair packed up on Sunday, Lottie found a jam jar of water left on the caravan step. The bud floated in it with its red petals spread wide, and the skull had come up through them like a moon through cloud, watching the empty lane where the grey coat had walked away.
