Geometric roses on the upper thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of two roses drawn in angular, faceted linework on the upper thigh. The roses are built from interlocking straight lines, with the larger bloom in the centre of the frame and a smaller one partly below it. The background shows a bed with a patterned pillow, and the wearer's denim jeans sit at the top of the frame.

Mum wanted to stop at Carrow Wells for the night. I wanted to keep going until the phone lost its last bar and the radio gave up on everything but static. So we sat in the car with the engine ticking, and I worked the paper with my thumbnails, folding and folding, because my hands needed a job more than I needed sleep.
Each fold had to be a straight line. That was the rule I set myself, the way Dad used to set rules about the lorries: no curves, nothing soft, just corners that met. By the time the sun dropped behind the ridge I had two blooms made of angles, one bigger than the other, the small one tucked under the first as if it had come along for company.
Mum held them up to the dashboard light and laughed the way she hadn't since the funeral. "They look like they'd cut you," she said. "Good," I said. "Roses should."
We drove on in the dark with the windows down. Somewhere past the cattle grid the road turned to gravel and then to nothing I could name, and I kept the two paper flowers on my knee, open to the stars.
