The hall still smelled of floor polish and lukewarm squash, and Dev had already claimed the table beside the fire door, the one you two used to sneak behind during Year Nine assemblies. He lifted a pint at you before you'd crossed the room, grinning like he'd been waiting all evening to be the first to say something daft.

“You still owe me the badge,” he said. “The one with the rose.”

You remember now. Behind the sports hall, the pair of you had drawn a crescent in biro on the back of your planners, split by a bar, with a rose pushed through the middle in red felt tip because it was the only colour Mr Pryce let you keep. You called it the Alliance. Nobody else was allowed in. Every member had to bring something to prove their loyalty, and you had never once decided what yours would be.

“I kept the notebook,” Dev said, and slid it across the table. The cover had gone soft as cloth. Inside, the emblem was coloured with more care than either of you had ever managed for homework, the black crescent pressed so hard the paper had torn through at one tip. Beneath it, in your handwriting, was a line you did not remember writing: Meet at the fire door, six o’clock, bring the rose.

You looked at the clock above the bar. Ten to nine. Then you looked at the fire door, its push bar still chipped where you’d kicked it open at fifteen, and realised he had never been asking about the badge at all.
