Realistic rose and shaded design on hands

Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A man in a burgundy suit and white shirt adjusts his tie, showing two hands tattooed in black and grey. One hand carries a realistic rose with soft shading and fine detail across its petals, while the other shows a smoky, heavily shaded figure. The muted background and tailored clothing keep the focus on the tattoos.

Sit down, the lot of you, and leave that cider alone until I've finished. This is the one about the Saturday the Palais at Caddon Pier burned from the inside. Not the building, mind. The band. Lenny Achterberg, who played bass like it owed him money, went up the back stairs at nine with a cigarette in his mouth and a red rose he'd bought off the flower woman at the station. Nobody saw him again until midnight.

Now the dancers say the smoke came first. A grey coil crept out of the cloakroom and went up past the mirror ball like it had a grievance to settle. Mrs Pelling, who ran that cloakroom with a hatpin, swore the smoke had the shape of a man leaning in to whisper, though nobody hears whispers over a foxtrot. She put a bowl of water on the ledge and told it to go and bother the sea instead.

Lenny came down at midnight with the rose gone brown at the edges and his hand trembling, and he had never once trembled for a note. He said he'd been up on the roof arguing with the smoke about who had danced with his sister in 1931. The smoke, he said, had won the argument and kept the rose as a receipt. Nobody believed a word of it, which is why we still tell it.

So when the bell goes and the lights come back up, you keep an eye on the cloakroom. If the air thickens and there's a petal lying flat on the boards, you dance with whoever's nearest and you do not ask where the bass player went.
