The ewes went up the top field in the first hard frost, and Dad said the old grey one would never come down again. Mum had wrapped the lamb in her cardigan and set it by the range, but the lamb died before the sun cleared the ridge, and we buried it under the hawthorn with the frost still on the spade.

That was the week the star came. I saw it first from the byre door at four, low over Harrow Clough, brighter than anything had a right to be above a Yorkshire winter. Dad said it was Venus and went back to his tea. I knew better. Venus does not hang over a single field and pulse like a struck match.
I took the torch and walked up through the bracken with the dog ahead of me, and the dog stopped at the wall and would not cross. On the far side, in the hollow where the drystone had come down in August, the grey ewe stood with her head in a bundle of hay, and beside her, bleached white in the starlight, lay a skull the size of a bucket. Nothing in it but frost. The ewe looked up at me as if I were late.
I did not tell Dad. I carried the hay down myself, one armful at a time, and by dawn there was a row of lanterns along the wall, each one with a stone on its lid so the wind would not take it. The star stayed until the milk lorry came. Then it was gone, and so was the ewe, and the next spring there were two lambs on the top field where there had been none.
