A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last rose on Kell Station was red, and the keeper's daughter was told to keep it alive through the dark season. Her name was Ilse Varro, and she was eleven when the sun slid behind the ridge and did not come back for ninety days. The dome lamps were rationed to the seed beds, so the roses grew in grey light, their petals pink at the edges where the glass was thin.

Each night the wind came down the ventilation shaft from the outer hull, and it wanted warmth. The old people said the wind had a mother somewhere beyond the rings, and she was owed a bloom for every frost. Ilse did not give the wind a flower. She pressed grey ash from the furnace room into a cloth, tied it to the grille with thread pulled from her own sleeve, and sang the stone-counting song until the vent went quiet.

The wind took the ash and left the roses standing. By the time the sun climbed back over the ridge, the ash had softened into the soil, and the leaves had dark veins like pencil lines drawn by a careful hand. Ilse's roses came up in three shades that season: pink for the morning, red for the furnace glow, and a shadowed grey on the stems of the ones she had watched through the longest nights.

On the first warm morning her father came down the steps with a basket and found her asleep among the stems with one palm open on the soil. He did not cut anything. The roses had already done what the wind asked, and he left them where they grew.
