Botanical · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A large rose sits on the shoulder, with dark purple leaves extending to the left. The left panel shows the rose in vivid magenta and purple with soft shading and dark outlines, while the right panel shows the same design in greys and black. The composition is a close crop of the shoulder with a light blue top visible below.

Nobody on the ground knew the recipe, and she wouldn't tell even me.

The fair came to Maidstone that October for six nights, and on the fourth a lad who worked the Ferris wheel came round asking for three roses for a girl he'd been too shy to speak to all summer. Mum made him wait while she chose. She cut the stems with the bread knife, wrapped each one in tissue, and told him the trick was to keep them out of the light, because the colour only held while it stayed in the dark.
He came back on the Saturday, when the lights were off and the wagons were already hitched, and asked her what she'd meant. She said the dye was strong enough for the dark and no more. He laughed, then stopped laughing, because the three roses in his hand had gone grey as ash at the edges. Mum just shrugged and went back to the vat.
I still have the last one from that batch, pressed flat in the back of a Bible. In a good light it's nearly purple. In a cupboard it's the colour of smoke, and I think of that lad every time I open the book.
