Rose under a glass dome on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo

A pink rose with green leaves and stem sits inside a glass dome, with loose petals scattered around the base. The dome and petals are outlined in sketchy black linework, while the rose and background are filled with soft, bleeding washes of pink, blue, green and purple. The tattoo is centred on the calf against a plain skin tone, with a tiled floor and grey chair visible behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had got into the conservatory hinges again, and by the time Ada Pell went looking for her nephew it was past seven and the kettle had gone cold. Tom was kneeling on the flagstones with a blowpipe borrowed from a glassworks in Stourbridge, turning a bubble of pale glass until it hung like a bell.

"It won't hold the heat," he said, "not for a rose." Ada had kept the Damask cutting alive since her husband died, carrying it indoors each November and feeding it stale tea. It had one bloom left, pink at the heart and bruised at the edges, and every morning another petal dropped onto the tiles like spilt paint. She had not told him she could not bear to watch the last of it go.

He spent three nights on the dome. Each evening he came back with blistered fingers and grey smudges on his cuffs, and each evening Ada lifted the glass to check the bloom, then set it down again, her breath clouding the inside until the sides sweated. "Keep the air in," Tom told her, "and let it do the work."

On the first warm morning of March she lifted the dome for good. The rose tipped its head towards the window and let fall one last petal, which landed on the tiles beside the old tea stain and stayed there. Ada did not sweep it up. She sat down on the step beside her nephew and watched the colour spread slowly into the grout, the way water does, until the sun came over the wall and began to dry it out.
