Roses and dreamcatcher tattoo design
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil sketch of a tattoo design showing two open roses with leaves above a beaded dreamcatcher with a radiating web. Three feathers hang from the dreamcatcher, with loose petals and soft wisps of shading around the edges. The linework is fine and the shading is grey and smudged, with no colour.

The rose on the third bulkhead has finally opened, and you are the only one awake to see it, which is how you like the early shift on Halden Ring. The lamps hum up to their dawn setting. Beyond the glass the dark is full of slow grey dust, the leftover weather of the belt, and your job is to keep the seed trays turning before the pumps wake the crew.

Yesterday Maren brought you a wire hoop she had found in the salvage crates, bent alloy strung with a web of thread so fine it looked drawn in pencil. Ceramic beads ran round its rim, and three grey feathers hung from its base, taken from some archive bird that had never flown in open air. She said it was for catching things. You told her the only things that drift past this ring are pollen and bad news, and she laughed and hung it above the cuttings anyway.
This morning the web holds a small brown seed pod that rode in on the last cargo drone, turning slowly in the vent draught like a bead on a string. You lift it out with two fingers, careful as a surgeon, and set it in the warm soil beside the open roses. Nothing about the thing looks alive, and nothing about the ring does either, most days.
Water the trays, you tell yourself, and go on.
