Roses and pocket watch in a lace frame on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a red rose and a pale white rose beside a gold pocket watch, with a strand of pink pearls curving around them. They sit inside a black lace-patterned frame with a small pink filigree ornament and green leaves at the lower edge. The roses are softly shaded with smooth blends, while the lace and frame use crisp black linework, and the palette is mainly reds, pinks and gold.

The pocket watch has stopped again, and Mr Hargreaves says it isn't the works, it's the winder, and you know he's lying because he has been saying it for three weeks. You lay it on the green baize of the counter beside the tray of pearls he took in part-payment from a widow in Clitheroe, and you watch the second hand shiver and fail to move.

Your mother kept a rose bush by the back step of the shop, white ones that bloomed too early and were ruined by the first frost. She cut the last of them every October and pressed them between the pages of the ledger, so that the book smelled of cloves and something sweeter, and you could never work out which year was which. Some mornings you think you have got her hands and not her patience.
Tom from the Co-op brings you a red rose on Thursday, wrapped in newspaper, and asks if you will walk down to the picture house with him on Saturday. You say you will think about it, which is what your mother used to say to your father, and you hate that you know it. The rose drops petals onto the lace runner while you talk, and neither of you mentions them.
That night you open the watch case with the tiny screwdriver, and inside, pressed flat against the glass, is a folded note in Mr Hargreaves's cramped hand: Keep the lady's time. You close it again, turn the crown until it catches, and hold the case to your ear until you hear the tick.
