Pink rose over black lace on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A large pink rose with soft shading sits at the top of a black lace design on the upper arm. The lace has fine detailed linework and solid black flower motifs, with strings of beads and a small crescent moon hanging below. The rose is shaded in pink and purple, while the lace is black, so the image shows both colour and black ink.

Right, you'll want the lamp lit, because the rain's come in sideways again and the stall boards won't keep it off. Ask me how I know. Ask Mrs Pell, who had the lace barrow by the fishmonger's for thirty-one years and never once got her shoes dry.

She kept one piece back, a black veil so old the holes outnumbered the threads. Every Saturday some fellow in a good coat offered her a fiver for it, and every Saturday she gave him the same answer: it's not for selling, it's for holding up to the light. Nobody knew what she meant. Then in March the rose man, Tobias Greave, with his buckets of cut stems dripping on the cobbles, bought the last of the pink ones off the wholesaler and carried one up to her barrow through the wet.
He didn't say a word. He just laid the bloom down on the black veil, right where the scalloped hem met the thread, and the pink came up through the lace like a lamp behind a curtain. Mrs Pell took a little silver crescent from her purse, a charm her mother had strung on jet beads, and hung it off the edge. Then she said, 'There. Now it's finished.'
Tobias went home and never sold a rose that wasn't wrapped in lace paper after that. And if you go past the fishmonger's on a wet Saturday, mind the third barrow, because that veil is still there under the rain sheet, and the moon on the end of it still catches the lamp. Off you go now. Mind the step, it's slick.
