The last bine came down off the wires on a Thursday in September, and Nell Varley had already counted the bales twice before her brother came stamping up the lane with the cart. Their mother had planted the roses along the yard wall the year the hop kiln went up, and every summer since, the butterflies had come through on their way south, following the line of the valley the way water does. Their father used to say they were heading for the mountains on the far side of the lake, where the pines went black at dusk and the sun dropped behind the ridge like a coin into a tin. Stan lifted the last sack onto the cart and stood beside her with his cap in his hands. 'You want to go up there, then?' She shook her head. The butterfly lifted off the hedge, rose past the kiln chimney, and turned over the wheat stubble towards the west, where the light had gone the colour of marmalade. Nell watched it until it was a speck above the hills, then she picked up the reins.

'Next year,' Stan said. 'Next year we'll see.' They drove down the lane in the dusk while the rain held off, and behind them the roses on the wall dropped their last petals one by one into the wet grass.
