Round green door in a hillside on the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a round green door set into a stone archway on a grassy hillside, with a small round window beside it, a bare tree branching across the top and pink and white flowers in the foreground. The shading is soft and smooth, with blended greens, ochres and browns that give the scene depth and a painted, three-dimensional look. Colour ink dominates across the whole composition, which is centred on the ribs and fills the frame.

Mind the rope and pull that blanket up, because this is the part my grandmother never let anyone skip. Eleven days out from Valparaíso, the sea gone flat as pewter, and the boy at the wheel had been pestering me for a ghost story since the last bell. So I gave him a door.

There is a hill on the far side of the Sorrow Shoals, and it is not on any chart your captain owns. It has grass like thick green wool, and a stone archway no mason would admit to building, and set into it a round door painted the colour of a fresh lime. Beside the door sits a little round window with a brass ring, and over the top a bare tree bends down as if it wants to read the knocker. Old Tomas Brede rowed in there in the year of the great drought, looking for water, and he knocked three times with his knuckle, the way you tap a cabin wall to tell the cook you're hungry.
The door opened on a kitchen with the kettle already singing, and a woman with flour to her elbows who said she had been expecting him since Tuesday. He stayed three days. He mended her fence, ate four eggs a morning, and came away with a jar of dried elderflower and a promise never to write down where the hill was. When he got back to the ship, the log said the wind had been south-westerly and the sea calm, and nothing else. Tomas kept that jar on his shelf until the day he died, and the lid smelled of rain every time it came off.
So when you're steering tonight and the stars start to lie to you, don't go hunting for land. Just listen for a knock, three times, soft as a hand on a green door. Now pass me that cup, and let's hear your father's song about the herring.
