Tree, birds and flowers on lower back

Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo

A bare tree silhouette and three small birds sit above a cluster of outlined flowers across the lower back, with loose black ink splatters beneath. The flowers and circular motifs are drawn in fine, hatched linework, while teal and light blue wash adds soft accents around the tree and flowers. Black ink dominates the structure and the blue wash brings colour to the composition.

Dear Kit,

The sycamore came up through the crack by the bins in April, and nobody had the heart to pull it. Mrs Okafor on the fourth floor says it is a weed and will bring the drains down, but she says that about everything, including you. I watched it from the walkway this morning while the lift was out again. Its branches are bare now, all grey hands, and it looks like a child's drawing of a tree that has been rubbed out in places and gone over again in ink.

Three starlings came over the block at about eight, flying low and sharp, the way they do before rain. I counted them twice because you always said that was bad luck, and then I laughed at myself on the stairs like an idiot. The flat has been quiet since Dad went into the home. I keep the radio on for company, and the presenter sounds like she is talking from the bottom of a bath.

I went down to the allotments yesterday with the tin of seed you left behind, the cheap packet with the pale blue lotus painted on the front. Nothing in there will flower until July, if it flowers at all. I scattered it along the wall anyway, where the black marks from the old bonfires still show through the ground like splashes from a bad paint pot. Sod it, I thought. Let the wall have something.

Come home at Easter if you can. The tree will be in leaf by then, and I want you to see it before someone decides it has to go. Bring the good kettle. Tell me what the sea looked like from that boat, and I will tell you which of the blue flowers came up, and we can stand on the walkway like a pair of idiots and count the birds.

Love, Nadia
