Watercolour forest landscape on a thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large landscape tattoo shows tall pine trees, a small cabin with a red roof, a calm lake and soft hills in greens, browns and yellows. The shapes are softly washed and blended with loose edges rather than hard outlines, with pale patches of skin left showing through in the foreground. The three side-by-side photographs show the piece from different angles across the outer thigh and knee.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wash goes on first, always, before any drawing. Your mother taught you that at the kitchen table in the years when the rain kept you both indoors and the water in the jam jar turned the colour of weak tea. Let the paper decide where the edges go, she said. Don't fight it.

By the time the pines are up the far shore you have forgotten the letter from the council, the one with the map folded inside it and the word road circled in red biro. The cabin's roof is the last thing you paint, a single loaded brush, because it was the first thing your father let you do alone. He bought the place for a bottle of schnapps and a debt nobody mentioned again, and he always said the lake looked better when it was still deciding whether to be grey or green.

The road will come in March, the letter says, and the shore will be gravel by the spring after. So you do not paint the road. You paint the birches going yellow on the near hill, and the mist lying on the water like a hand that has not yet decided to lift.

When you finally put the brush down, the bottom corner of the sheet is still damp, where the foreground thins out into bare paper. You leave it that way. Let the white stay where the path would have run, and let whoever comes next decide what it is for.
