Row of elephants on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A line of four elephants walks left to right across the inner forearm, with the largest at the front and smaller ones following behind. The linework is thin and single-stroke with no shading, and each elephant is outlined in a different colour: blue, red, orange and green. The skin fills most of the frame, with a pink shirt and a knitted sleeve with pink dots at the edge.

The dry year had drained the lower pans, and Ama Lune, eldest cow of the herd, decided the young ones would cross the ridge to the green valley before the sun climbed. She put the smallest calf at the front, as her own mother had done, and told each of the others to hold the tail ahead with the tip of its trunk. Nobody argued. Nobody in that herd argued with a cow who had walked the same road through four droughts.

A boy from the village below was sent up to bring them down before dark. He found them strung out along the slope, the stone hot under their feet, and sat on a rock with his cap in his hands to watch them pass. Each calf wore a daub of paint on its flank from the keeper's pot, blue, red, orange and green, so he could count them from the bottom of the hill. Four, all holding on, and none of them stopping for him.
At the top he asked the eldest why she trusted the smallest to lead. She lifted her head and pointed with her trunk at the calf's feet, which were setting themselves exactly where the flat stones lay. The little one had walked the road in the rains, she said, and feet keep what eyes forget.
The boy went down ahead of them to light the lamp in his mother's window. Behind him he heard the herd come over the ridge one step at a time, and when he looked back at dusk the four of them stood together in the grass, each trunk still curled round the tail in front, as if none had yet been told they could let go.
