Line-art elephants walking along a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Four outlined elephants walk in a single line from the wrist towards the elbow, each one a simple, unshaded contour. The linework is thin and even, with each elephant in a different colour: blue, red, orange and green. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a soft, out-of-focus background of a pink top and long brown hair.

Day 14 of the walk, and the calves have finally stopped looking back at the lorry. Ama says it is the dust. I think they have decided we are the herd now. The four of them move in a single line along the old rail cutting, trunk to tail, the way the first four did in the photographs Dr Oyelaran kept in her tin. She marked each of them with a wash of dye on the ear before we left the hatchery: indigo for the one who bit the tranquiliser dart, rust for the stubborn one, ochre for the one who always wants to lead, and a green that Ama says matches the lichen on the cutting walls.

Nobody told us the procession would matter. The stations we pass have no roofs left, only the metal ribs, and the calves stop at each one and lift their trunks as if sniffing for something the air forgot. Yesterday the indigo one stopped at a signal post where the station name is still painted on the board, and it stood there so long that Ama had to go back and walk it past with a branch of acacia.
This evening I counted them at the fire, the way Dr Oyelaran taught me, one finger each. I got four, then four again, then a fifth that was only my own shadow thrown long across the sand. I have decided not to write that down as a sign. I am writing it down as a fact: the herd is walking, and they are walking toward the hills where the water still stands in the old quarry.
Tomorrow I will walk at the back, where I can see all four colours at once, and keep the line straight.
