Blue sauropod dinosaur on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small sauropod dinosaur with a long neck and curled tail is tattooed on the forearm, shown in a single blue-teal ink. The outline and shading are simple and clean, with the body filled in a flat tone and some darker detail. The photograph is taken outdoors in daylight, with the arm and hand in the foreground against a wooden fence and leafy background.

The man at the Vehrin crossing had been holding the wooden dinosaur for four minutes when I came to the window, and he had not yet decided whether it was contraband. Blue paint, chipped at the nose, a neck bent round like a question mark. Behind him the lorries stretched back up the switchbacks into the cloud, engines idling.

The owner was a girl of about seven in a yellow anorak, sitting on a suitcase with her grandmother's hand resting on her shoulder. Her papers said Lina Sarn. The toy said nothing, which is how toys usually answer questions. I asked her what he was called. She told me his name was Bruno, after the bus driver who had let her ride up front, and that he could not be declared because he had been to the lake and the lake did not stamp passports.

I wrote the form the way the form wanted it written: one carved toy, painted, no declared value. Then I turned him over and found the tail had been glued back on, and under the glue there was a small crescent of teeth marks. A dog, perhaps, or a brother. The grandmother said nothing at all. I understood then that the whole crossing had been about that tail.

I stamped the sheet and slid it under the glass. Lina took Bruno back and held him up to the window so he could see the lorries, and the barrier arm lifted with his long neck level with it. Nobody else in the queue looked up. His tail stayed bent the way it had been folded into the bag, and I thought it would stay that way for good, which seemed the right shape for a dinosaur that had been somewhere.
