Small elephant outline on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small elephant is drawn in a single thin black outline, facing right with its trunk curled forward and its legs and ears simply indicated. The linework is even and unshaded, with no fill or grey tones. The tattoo sits centrally on the inner wrist against a pale, bright background, with the hand visible above.

The thing turned out to be a pewter elephant no bigger than a thumbnail, found wedged in the seat cushion of the 16:12 to Shrewsbury. Its trunk curled forward like a question nobody had asked. I logged it in the ledger, sealed it in a brown envelope and put it on the shelf between a bicycle bell and a glove that might once have been a puppet.

She told me her grandfather had carried it in his waistcoat for forty years, and that the legs had been worn smooth by his thumb. She wanted to know if it was genuine silver. I said I didn't know what genuine meant for a thing that had spent a winter under upholstery. Elephants never forget, I told her, which is the sort of thing I'd repeated for twenty years without once checking.

She didn't claim it. She asked me to keep it a week in case her brother rang, and went out into the rain with her collar up. On the Friday the shelf was bare, and I took the envelope out of the drawer to find it empty. I had sketched the outline on the back of a timetable so I'd remember its shape. It was the only thing left in the office that looked like it had been looked after.
