Row of fine line symbols on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A row of thin black symbols and circles runs along the outer thigh, with a dot-centred ring at the far end. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the marks sit evenly spaced in a single line. The photo is taken from the side with the person seated on a rug in a kitchen, and the tattoo is the clear focus of the composition.

Nobody on the fourteenth floor of Harrow Court could say who first scratched the marks into the stairwell wall. Mrs Okafor blamed the damp. Mr Dunne from eleven blamed children with a compass. But the row ran at the height of a child's reach, a line of small ringed shapes like beads strung on wire, and it always ended in a circle with a dot at its heart.

Ruth Calloway, who had lived on the ninth floor since the blocks went up, counted them each morning on her way down, her shopping bag knocking against her knee. Eleven symbols, then the bull's eye. One winter the lift broke for six weeks, and somewhere in the fifth week she found a twelfth mark, thin and fresh, sitting between the cross and the crescent, as though someone had got the order wrong and mended it.

She asked Desmond, the caretaker, who kept a radio on the boiler room windowsill. He studied the wall for a long time. "That's not ours to read," he said. "That's the building keeping count of who's still in it."

That night Ruth took a biro from the kitchen drawer and added a thirteenth mark beside the dot, a small square, and went to bed. By morning the square had been rubbed away, though the paint beneath was clean. Below the row, pressed hard into the plaster, was a single new circle with no dot in it, and the lift had come back on, its light steady, waiting at the bottom of the shaft.
