Script quote along the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A close side view of a torso showing two lines of black cursive lettering across the ribs. The strokes are thin and even, with some softening where the text runs toward the edge of the frame. The skin is warm toned and the background is bright and washed out, with a grey towel held against the body.

Dear Tomasz, we are four days out from Liverpool and the sea has finally stopped trying to climb into my bunk, so I am writing this on the back of a cargo manifest while the mate pretends not to read over my shoulder.

Old Dunmore, the carpenter, has been mending the hold rails since Madeira. Yesterday a gull came down onto the foredeck, exhausted and furious, and Dunmore caught it in his coat before anyone could stop him. He spent the afternoon bending thin strips of oak into a small curved cage. When the cook asked what he was about, Dunmore only tapped the wood and said hearts are wild creatures, but only ribs are cages, and a bird ought to know which one it is.
That got under my skin more than it should have. I went down to the hold for lamp oil and found the cage hanging from a hook, its little door swung wide, and the gull perched on the mizzen rail above us, watching the wake as though it had been out there all along. Dunmore had not built it to keep anything. He had built it so the bird would have something to fly out of.
I have asked the captain for a berth on the return run, and he has agreed, provided I can splice a rope without weeping. Keep the kettle warm and tell Mother the sea is kinder than the newspapers say. The gull is still aboard, and so, for now, am I. Love, Ada.
