Small fine line geometric tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of an outlined rectangle sits on the inner forearm, with fine black linework forming angular, stylised plant or leaf shapes inside. The woman's face is out of frame, with her long hair falling over one shoulder and her other hand raised to her head. The ink is black on a plain background of a grey t-shirt and a softly lit room.

The lift at Carrow House stopped between the ninth and tenth floors on a Tuesday, the same as it had every Tuesday since March, and this time I went down the shaft with a torch in my teeth to find out why. Forty years of fitting lifts for the council had taught me that a building usually tells you what is wrong if you look in the right place. Here it was a flattened square of card jammed in the door sensor, no bigger than a playing card, its corners softened by rain.

It was a seed packet. Someone had printed sorrel on the front in faded green ink, and someone else, in biro, had drawn over the leaves, sharpening every edge until they looked like folded paper. The packet had come off the tenth-floor balcony ledge, where a woman in flat 41 kept herbs in old paint tins ever since the council removed the planters. I knew that because she had complained about it at the residents' meeting, and I had nodded in all the wrong places.
I took the packet up with me in my top pocket and knocked on her door at six. Nobody answered, but the window was open and a radio was playing something with a fiddle in it. I slid the packet under the mat with a note saying the lift was fixed, the sensor had a new seal, and she should keep her seeds off the shaft.
Three weeks later the lift stopped again, and there was another card in the grille, this time with a rectangle drawn round a row of leaves, like a window with plants on the sill. I still have both. They sit in the drawer with the spare fuses, and when the lift behaves I take them out and look at how much sharper the drawings have become.
