Row of five elephants on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A line of five black outline elephants walks in a row across the side of a foot, trunks linked to tails, shrinking in size from left to right. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the tattoo is in black ink only. The foot rests on a dark wooden floor, with the tattoo centred in the lower half of the frame.

Old Mrs Pellew's herd had crossed the flats at dusk for as long as anyone in Calder Quay could remember, and every evening somebody had to fetch them in before the channel filled.

The leader stopped at the first post and swung her great head left, then right, as if reading a page nobody else could see. The second and third waited behind her, patient. The fourth shifted its weight and sighed through its trunk. The smallest, at the very back, had always been the slowest, or so the village believed, and Mara had never thought otherwise until it pushed past the others and walked straight out onto a strip of sand that looked, to her, exactly like every other strip. It stopped, turned, and waited for her to notice.
They went in single file behind it, the water sliding silver on either side, until the harbour wall rose out of the murk and the lamp swam into view. The big ones climbed the slipway first, their feet ringing on the stones. Mara counted them up the slip. Four. She counted again to be sure, and the last one, no bigger than a sack of flour, paused at the top and flicked its tail at her as though she had been the one who needed guiding.
