Row of elephants across a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A line of small elephants, roughly four to five, walks left to right across the top of a foot. The linework is a single thin black outline with no shading or fill. The ink is black on pale skin, with a wooden floor visible beneath the foot.

Dear Tom,

The lorry broke down again outside Shrewsbury, so we walked the herd the last four miles into the field at Bishop's Meadow, five of them in a line with their trunks hooked to each other's tails the way Gran taught us. You'd have laughed. Dolly kept stopping to steal sugar beet off the verge, and Ruth had to nudge her along with the end of the stick.
Gran would have wanted the walk done properly. She was always fussy about the order: the old girl Ruth first, then the two middle ones, then little Pip at the back, who insisted on carrying the rope in her own mouth like a dog with a lead. Since the funeral the line has had no leader, and we've been shuffling about like a wedding party that lost the bride. Last Tuesday Pip stood in the gateway and refused to move until someone let her go first. Nobody argued.
Tonight I sat on the caravan step with my boots off and counted them against the sky, five dark shapes with their ears out like sails. I wrote the figures in the ledger: feed, farrier, the fair's share of the gate. Then I shut the book, went out in my socks, and took the rope myself.
We open Saturday at half past two. Come and see the line. Bring your own boots.
Love, Win Holloway
