Two matching ornate elephants on heels

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two elephants with the same outline, each filled with dotted, swirled and paisley-style ornament, sit on the back of two heels. The linework is fine and dark, with the pattern details built from dots and curved lines. The tattoos are black ink only, and the photo is a close, top-down view of bare feet resting on a dark textured surface.

The two elephants had been born in the same hour, in the hills above a town where the river bent like a question mark, and from the first they were never apart. Where one went the other followed, placing each great foot in the print the first had left. The villagers called them the Pair and laid out marigolds for them at the ford.

When the dry years came, the elder went north to find the salt pans where the old herds wintered, and promised to return before the monsoon. She did not return. The younger waited at the ford through the cracked months, eating the last of the reeds, and each evening she traced the swirling patterns on her skin with the tip of her trunk, the way her mother had taught her, round and round until the dots lined up like seeds in a pod.

Then one morning the rain came early, brown and loud, and on the far bank a shape stood up out of the mist. It was the elder, thinner, her patterns faded to grey, and she had walked the whole long way with her head down, counting steps. Neither spoke. The younger lifted her trunk and curled it round the elder's, and together they stepped into the water, each planting a foot exactly where the other had planted hers.

The ford still keeps their prints, the old women say, though the river has moved on a dozen times since. Walk it at dusk and you will find the marks in the mud, paired and even, with a dotted swirl pressed into every one.
