The grey mare left the sale ring at Ashby Fair before the auctioneer had finished his first call, scattering two dealers and a bale of hay. Tom Garrow watched her go from the rail with a goose feather caught in his collar, one he had picked up in the straw that morning and never thought to throw away.

Nobody in the county had ever ridden her. The dealer who brought her down from Lincolnshire swore she had been broken twice and sold back twice, and Tom had only agreed to bid because his daughter Nell, who was nine and had not yet learned to be polite about horses, had asked him to. Now the girl stood at the gate with her hands on the top bar, watching the mare run the length of the lane with her mane streaming out like smoke.

By dusk the mare had cleared the hedges and was grazing alone beside the old drovers' track. Tom walked up with a bucket and no rope, and he did not call her by name, because he had never known it. He stood with the feather between his finger and thumb, turning it against the failing light so the barbs showed grey and fine, the way a pencil shades them when someone takes their time over it.

She came to the bucket on her own terms, the way wild things do once they have decided you are not worth running from. Nell opened the gate that night and didn't ask. The sale papers went into the stove, and Tom reckoned some things were never for sale at all. The mare had only needed a field big enough to prove it.
