Tribal horse head with flowing swirls
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A bold black design of a horse's head in profile, with its mane rendered as sharp flame-like strokes. Long tapering tribal lines sweep down and away from the head, with solid black fills and fine grey shading along the edges. The design is centred on a cream background that fades to a darker vignette at the corners.

The mare had already bolted by the time Ines reached the hangar doors, her mane streaming behind her in the dust-thick light like something burning sideways. Nobody on Caddis Station kept horses anymore. The last six had gone to the agri-ring as ration, and this one had been bred from a line nobody had recorded on purpose. Ines ran anyway, boots skidding on the grated floor, past the seed vaults and the cold coil of the water mains.

Out on the north apron the mare stopped beside the lander skeleton that had sat there since the first crew left. She turned her head in that sharp, proud way the old stud-book drawings showed, and looked back at Ines as though Ines were the one who had come late. Ines had grown up on stories of the rope-riders of the outer cut, who crossed the long tailwinds between the mining rings on sails of foil. None of them had ever come back to say a horse could outrun the atmosphere lock.
The old keeper had told her that a horse only runs toward something it can already see. Ines looked past the apron to the black ridge where the sun would crest in four hours. The dust above it was lifting in long tapering streaks, the same sweep that shaped the mare's flanks in the faded print pinned to the tack room wall. She understood then that the mare had never been running from the station at all.
She pulled the lock bar and let the hangar door grind open. The mare did not look back. She went out over the grey ground in a line of fire-coloured dust, and Ines stood in the open doorway with the cold coming in around her, watching the trail hang in the air long after the shape had gone.
