Black and grey wolf tattoo in mid-stride across the forearm, framed by fine dotted triangles and lines.

Running wolf with dotted geometry on forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf is shown mid-leap, with its legs stretched forward and back and its tail extended, drawn in fine black linework. Its fur is built up with dense, fine hatching and stippling that gives it volume. Thin dotted lines form triangles and angular paths around the animal, and the tattoo is shown in black and grey on a pale forearm against a plain wall.

The dead reckoning book had gone soft at the corners by the time Tobias Penrose started drawing in its margins. He was fourteen, a cabin boy from Falmouth with ink on every finger, and I let him sit on the locker beside my chart table because the watch was long and the Atlantic lay flat as a plate.

It was his wolf that caught my eye. He had drawn it running low across the page, forelegs flung out ahead and hind legs stretched behind, its tail streaming like smoke off a funnel. Then he began pricking the paper around it with the point of his dividers, a dot at every noon sight, and joining the dots with a rule so the lines made triangles, one nested inside the next. 'So it knows where it's going,' he said, when I asked what he was at.

Three nights later the fog came down thick as wool and the compass card swung loose in its bowl. Captain Ruddock wanted our position by dawn. My figures had drifted a full degree and I could not find the error. I sat at the table with my lamp turned low, following the boy's dotted triangles back across the sea, and found that every sight I had taken lay on a line the wolf had already run.

At first light the fog thinned and there was the Lizard, grey and exactly where the wolf had been heading all along. I said nothing to the captain about the drawing. I gave Tobias a shilling and told him to keep at it, because the next time the fog came down I might need something to follow.
