The grey one came up the stairwell of Harrow House the week the lifts broke, yowling at every landing as if the building owed him money. Nobody on the seventh floor claimed him. I was the only one who left a saucer of tinned mackerel by the bin chute, so he decided I was his.

The black one arrived in February, all elbows and bad temper, and sat on the windowsill of the flat opposite until the old man who lived there gave up and let her in. For a month they had no names between them. The old man called the grey one Sergeant because he sat so straight, and the black one Mouse, which was a lie she never once lived up to.

Then the lift shaft flooded and the block went quiet for three days. On the third evening I found Sergeant sitting on the landing outside my door, and Mouse pressed against him with her head tucked under his chin, the way you lean on a wall that is still warm from the sun. Neither of them moved when I knelt down. The old man had gone into hospital on the Tuesday, and nobody had thought to tell the cats.

I took them both in that night. Sergeant ate half the mackerel while Mouse watched me with her eyes narrowed to slits, as though I were the one who needed to earn my keep. By morning she was asleep against his flank and he had not stirred. I left the door open a crack so they could find their own way out when they wanted to. They never did.
