Seated fox with pine trees on forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fox sits upright on a rocky outcrop, looking to one side, with a pair of slender pine trees rising on the left and right. The linework is dark and fairly bold, with hatched and stippled shading on the fox's coat and the rock. The composition is black and grey only, with the design centred on the forearm against plain skin.

You have been told the fox has come down from the hills again, which nobody believes, because the nearest hill is past the ring road and the nearest pine is a Christmas tree somebody left by the bins in January. Still, Mrs Okafor from flat 9 swears she saw it sitting on the concrete plinth outside the community hall, upright and unbothered, staring at the block as if it had been expecting you.

You go down on Thursday with a bag of chips and a torch. The plinth is cold. Nothing is there but a flattened can and a child's scooter wheel. Then you hear it: a single bark from the strip of scrubby birch behind the substation, and the sound lifts your shoulders the way they used to when your grandfather took you up to the forest above the reservoir, where the pines were so tall the light came down in pieces.
You remember his rule: never chase, always wait. So you sit on the cold plinth, pull your coat over your knees, and wait. Lights come on one by one up the face of the tower, a grid of yellow squares, and somewhere a television laughs. Ten minutes pass. Then the fox steps out from under the stairwell, pauses at the edge of the light, and looks not at you but up at the top floor, where the lift still doesn't work.
It sits. You sit. Neither of you moves for a long time, two creatures who have stopped expecting much from the place they live. Then it turns its head, lifts its tail, and trots back into the dark, leaving a single neat print in the frost. In the morning you tell Mrs Okafor it was a fox. She says she knew that. You don't tell her about the pines.
