Sailing ship above a cluster of roses

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A three-masted sailing ship with full sails and flags sits above a cluster of open roses and leaves, with wisps of cloud or smoke on either side. The design uses bold black outlines with fine hatching on the ship's hull and sails, and no shading or colour. The ship is centred and the roses form a wide base along the bottom of the composition.

Sit down, sit down, the cake will keep. My grandmother, God rest her, was married on the Feast of Saint Brannock in the year the Halcyon came home short a mainmast. Everybody on the quay knew that ship. Three masts, flags flying as if they had something to prove, and her sails so full of wind you'd think the sea owed them money.

Her man, Tobias Wren, had gone out on her with a promise in his coat pocket. He'd bring her roses from the first foreign port that grew them. So when the Halcyon limped round the headland in March, he had a fistful of them wrapped in wet newspaper from Lisbon, and most of the petals had gone brown at the edges by the time he reached the steps.

She didn't scold him. She took the stems and walked straight to the harbour wall, knelt in the salt and pushed the roots into a crack in the stone. Half the village thought she'd lost her wits. Tobias just stood there with his cap in his hands, looking like a man who had expected a bigger row.

Those roses are still on the wall. Nobody has planted anything there since, and nobody has ever pulled one out. Every spring they come back a little wilder, and every spring the old fishermen touch their caps as they pass, the way you'd greet a friend who waited up for you. So raise your glasses. May your own ship come home, and may there be a few flowers left alive on the bow.
