Galleon under sail
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A three-masted galleon with full sails, rigging and torn pennants sits on rough water, drawn as a detailed sepia study. The stern is richly ornamented with carved panels, scrollwork and rows of gun ports, and the hull is shaded with soft gradients. The composition is tall and centred, with the ship filling most of the frame against a pale background.

The cook aboard the Margaret Ann had a rule about the stern lanterns, and nobody on the crew had ever learned why it existed. Each evening Mistress Hale carried the brass lamp up past the carved panels to the great cabin, and each morning she brought it down again trimmed and cold. Tomas, the boy who scraped the pots, asked her once what the lamp was for, and she told him it was for the ships that were not there yet.

That winter the wind stayed in the north and the galleon ran short of fresh water. The men began to grumble at the rations, and the captain's steward began counting the casks twice a day. Mistress Hale said nothing about any of it. She went up with her lamp at dusk and came down at dawn, and the crew noticed that the gun ports on the lower deck had been painted over in the night, then painted open again, as if someone had changed their minds about which of them should be seen.
On the ninth night of the north wind a grey sail came up out of the murk to the larboard side, low and close, with no lamp showing. Tomas saw it first from the galley hatch. Mistress Hale climbed to the stern rail with her lamp unlit, held it over the water, and waited. The stranger's lanterns swung once, twice, and then answered from across the dark. She set the lamp down on the rail and went below to warm the soup.
In the morning the cask count was right, and a barrel of sweet water sat at the foot of the galley stairs with no mark on it. Mistress Hale lit the stern lamp at dusk as she always had, and this time Tomas went up behind her to see who was waiting on the other side.
