Sailing ship and compass rose on the side
Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A sailing ship with billowing sails is drawn with loose, sketchy linework and soft grey shading, with faint trailing strokes around its hull. Below and to the left, a compass rose is shaded in blue and purple, with a small black anchor and a wisp of ink beneath it. The composition runs diagonally across the curved skin, with the ship and compass balanced against each other.

The schooner Hesper's Dowry had been three weeks becalmed off the Azores when Tobias Wren found the compass in the bosun's locker, its brass face gone green and its needle stuck hard to the north-east. Captain Lusk swore it was the damp. Wren, who had carved his own dividers from whalebone and knew a true needle when he saw one, said nothing, but he took the thing up on deck and held it to the sky.

On the third night the sails began to lift without wind. Grey canvas bellied and tore along its seams, and the water around the hull turned the colour of a bruise. Men crossed themselves. Lusk ordered the boats readied. Wren only watched the needle swing, slow as a clock hand, round to the west, where there was nothing but a smudge of cloud and a black rock shaped like an anchor fluke that he had sailed past twice without noticing.
They followed it. The ship moved on no breeze but its own stubborn will, and at dawn the mist parted over a harbour nobody had charted, its quay lined with lamps still burning. Lusk stepped ashore first, then turned back, puzzled, to find the rail gone grey and the ship's name fading from the stern like breath off glass.
Wren kept the compass. Years later, when he drew charts for the Admiralty, he never once marked that harbour, but every chart he signed carried a small compass rose in the corner, its points inked in dusk blue, with a little anchor tucked beneath for the men who had not come home.
