Pirate ship with skull sail on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo depicts a full-rigged pirate ship at sea, with a skull and crossbones flag on the main sail and a dark hull above rippling water. The work uses fine linework for the rigging and shaded greys for the sails, waves and hull, giving a sense of depth and volume. The image is a three-panel composite of the same forearm tattoo, viewed from the front and both sides.

Dear Mother, the weather has turned at last, and the Marigold Quill has stopped rolling her guts out over every wave. Captain Ashdown let the crew have a holiday from the pumps this morning, so I am writing this on the back of a chart while the bosun sings badly below. You will be pleased to hear I have not yet been made to walk the plank, though Mr Pell swears he saw a fish eyeing me on Tuesday as though it knew my name.

The main sail has been mended twice since Madeira. The cook says the black flag with the bones on it draws the wind better than any charm, and I have stopped arguing, since we have not been fired upon by a single Spaniard this whole crossing. Yesterday the lookout cried a sail to the north. We all crowded the rail with our spyglasses. It was only a Dutch fishing boat with its nets hung out to dry, and the whole ship laughed until the first mate threatened to log us for idleness.

I have kept the ledger for four months now and I am rather good at it. Every barrel of salt pork, every coil of rope, every man who has gone sick with the flux is written down in my best hand. Captain says that when we return to Bristol he will buy me a proper desk and a pair of spectacles. I told him I would rather have a dry bed, and he said that was a pirate's answer and I must learn to want treasure like a gentleman.

The sea is very flat tonight, and the moon is laying a silver road across it that I could almost walk along if I were foolish enough to try. I will post this at the next port, whichever it is. Keep the lamp lit in the window for me, and tell Father I have not once been seasick since the Canaries.

Your loving son, Thomas
