Sailing ship and full moon on a calf
Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A tall sailing ship with furled and set sails and detailed rigging sits at the centre of the design, silhouetted in solid black ink. A soft grey full moon sits behind the ship, and a dark, streaked reflection of the hull and masts appears in the water beneath it. The shading is smooth and gradual, and the composition is a vertical panel following the shape of the calf.

Dear Tom, I am writing this on the back of a bread invoice because the till roll ran out an hour ago and the dough will not wait for anybody. The first batch is in and the kitchen smells the way it did when we were small, of salt and scorched crust. Mum's old peel still hangs by the back door where you left it.

The moon was enormous when I unlocked the shutters. It sat right over the harbour, grey and soft as a thumbprint on a window, and under it the Maren Hale was coming in past the breakwater with her sails furled to the yards, all but the topsails. I counted her rigging the way Aunt Vi used to count loaves on the rack. Nobody else was up. Her reflection went down into the water and broke apart in the swell, and for a minute I could not tell which of the masts was real.
You wrote in March that the watch on that ship is four hours on and four off, and that nobody really sleeps through a night at sea. I kept your letter in the flour bin, which is where I keep the things I don't want the damp to get at.
The boat came alongside at six, just as the second batch was coming out. A lad I didn't know jumped the rail with a canvas bag. Inside was your sea tin, dented on one corner, and a note in your awful handwriting: bake the loaf Dad used to, I'll be ashore by Friday. I have put the kettle on. The loaves are cooling on the rack, the moon has gone pale above the wall, and I am going to leave the back door open.
