Sailing ship in a teacup on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A three-panel collage showing a full-colour sailing ship with grey-shaded sails and a brown hull, rising from a pale blue teacup filled with swirling waves. A red five-petalled flower with dark green leaves sits on the front of the cup, and a stippled grey cloud fills the space behind the ship. The bold black outlines, solid fills and stippled shading are typical of traditional tattooing, and the composition is centred on the forearm.

The cloud had been drifting over the Halberd Reach for eleven days, and Maren Oyelaran had stopped expecting it to clear. She kept the galley's last working kettle running on the lower deck of the tea barge Patience, and every morning she carried a cup up to the wheelhouse, where Captain Tobiah Renn sat with his boots on the console, watching the grey dark wrap around the hull.

The cup was older than either of them. It had come aboard in a crate marked fragile when the Patience was still a cargo tender running between the orbital gardens and the refinery moons, and it had a chip on the rim that Tobiah refused to let anyone mend. Blue glaze, a gold handle, and a red five-petalled flower painted on the front that the damp had softened to the colour of old wine. Every watch, Maren poured in the synth-leaf and swirled it until the surface curled into small waves.
On the eleventh morning the sensors picked up a derelict hull drifting inside the cloud, a three-master with its sails furled like folded paper. Tobiah stared at the readout for a long time. 'That's the Gretchen Vale,' he said. 'My grandfather's ship. She went down in a dust storm before I was born.' Maren looked at the cup in her hands, at the waves she had made, and understood he had been sailing toward something he had carried in his head his whole life.
They matched her drift and fired a line across. When the hatch opened there was no air to breathe, only a hush over a deck shaped like the rim of a saucer, and somewhere forward a brass bell rang once for them, as if someone had tapped a spoon against china. Tobiah laughed until he wept. Maren set her cup down on the console and left it there, full and going cold, for the first time in years.
