Sailing ship on the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A large sailing ship with full sails and visible rigging sits on the side of the torso, with its hull resting on rolling waves at the bottom of the design. Soft grey shading builds the sails, clouds and sea, with fine linework on the masts and rigging. The image is in black and grey only, and the design wraps around the ribs and fills most of the frame.

The gap in the wall at the bottom of Gran's garden was the only thing keeping the leeks from the North Sea, and every spring the salt wind found it again. I'd been pulling bindweed from the rhubarb since seven, and the cloud over the harbour had gone the colour of wet slate, the kind Gran called a squall's cradle because it always rocked something loose.

The ship came round the headland just after two, three masts under full sail, her rigging drawn so fine against the cloud that I thought at first someone had pencilled her onto the sky. Gran had seen her once before, the summer I was born, and she'd said the ship was carrying Uncle Tobias home. That was nonsense. Tobias went down off the Dogger Bank in 1921 and nobody ever found the lamp he'd left burning in his cabin. Still, I stood at the wall with my trowel and watched her come in with no wake at all, her bow lifting over waves that never broke against her.
I could have shouted for the neighbours. Instead I went back to the potting bench, took out the tin of sweet pea seed Gran had labelled in her square capitals, and pressed three seeds into the wet soil under the wall. When I looked up the sails had gone slack and the sea was flat as a plate. The rhubarb was lush and the gap in the brick was only a gap, with a thin line of gull feathers caught in it, the grey of old rope.
Gran always said you plant for the people on the far side of the wall. I dusted the dirt from my knees and left the gate open a crack, in case anyone was passing.
