Moon Princess dagger and banner design

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A traditional style design showing a dagger with a pink and purple hilt, wrapped by two ribbon banners that read MOON PRINCESS, with a pink crescent moon and wing shapes behind it. The linework is bold and solid with flat colour fills and simple highlights, rather than shading. The design is shown in bright pink and purple on a dark grey sweatshirt worn by a mannequin against a plain background.

Mirela counted the knives twice before the matinee, the way her father used to, though there were only six left and four had lost their shine. The tent smelled of damp canvas and the sugared peanuts nobody bought any more. Outside, the painted sign for the Moon Princess had faded to the colour of weak tea, and its ribbons had begun to curl at the corners like old receipts.

Vasko, the knife man, had always insisted the act needed a dagger through the heart of the ribbon, not the target, so the crowd would hold its breath. Mirela had never minded the blades. What frightened her was the silence afterwards, when the lamps swung back up and two hundred people remembered they had a train to catch.

On the final night of the season the crescent lamp fizzled and the ring went dark. Mirela stood against the board in her spangled dress, pink silk wound round her wrists, and listened to the first blade thud into the wood beside her ear. Instead of closing her eyes she looked out into the blackness and found Vasko's grandson in the front row, sketching on the back of a programme with a stub of pencil.

He held the page up when the lights came back. A dagger, a crescent, two ribbons curling round the hilt, her name in letters with too many loops. She took it from him, folded it into her sleeve, and walked out past the faded sign without bowing, leaving the knives behind for the next girl to count.
