Sailor Moon cats on two forearms
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The photograph shows two forearms, each with a cartoon-style cat from the Sailor Moon series. The left tattoo is a dark navy cat with orange eyes, a crescent moon on its forehead and a gold and pink compact held against its body, outlined in black. The right tattoo is a mostly grey and white cat with blue eyes and a blue bow, holding a red and gold compact above its head, with soft shading and some colour accents.

At Hollin Pit the lamps burned all night, and two cats kept the lamp-room where the men signed their tallies. The black one was called Vesper. She had a small crescent moon on her brow and would not go down the shaft unless the moon was showing through the winding-house slats. The grey tom, Flint, thought the moon was overrated and said so loudly enough for the overman to hear.

One February the moon went out. It was not gone from the sky, which stayed clear over the spoil heaps, but from the shelf where Vesper kept her pink and gold compact. Tom Garside, the banksman's boy, had taken it down to see if it would open. Inside was a small rosy light, round as a coin. When he flicked it open the whole colliery went dark for the length of one breath. The cage stopped halfway down the shaft, and thirty men hung in the cold with nobody speaking.
Vesper came up the ladder one rung at a time and sat on the boy's chest until he gave it back. Flint said it was a waste of a good afternoon's sleep. She pressed the compact shut with her nose, and the light came back into the lamp-room like milk poured into a bowl.
The cage came up with every man in it, and Tom cried into his cap while the overman pretended not to notice. Vesper was given the warm place beside the boiler for the rest of her days. Ever after, the men of Hollin said a cat in the lamp-room was worth three canaries, and Flint never once admitted he had been frightened.
