Matching geometric wolf heads on forearms
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two wolf head tattoos sit side by side on the inner forearms of a person wearing a denim shirt and dark skirt. Both wolves are built from angular, faceted shapes with bold dark planes and lighter fills, giving a low-poly geometric look. The left wolf uses grey, beige and black tones, while the right wolf is rendered in blues and teal, and the photo is framed closely on the arms and hands.

Dear Nell,

The sea has been grey since Tuesday, the kind of grey that makes the gulls look stitched onto it. We are three days out from Whitby with the hold half full of haddock, and Skipper Dunmore has stopped swearing at the winch, which he only does when he is frightened. You would laugh at me. I have started talking to the boat the way Dad used to.
The wolves are the other thing. Old Ruth Calloway, who mended nets in the harbour loft, painted two wolf heads on a pair of spare oar blades before she died, one smoked the colour of a November dune, the other all teal and slate like the water under the pier. She cut them into flat planes of colour that catch the lamp at odd angles, so when the light swings, the grey one seems to look at you and then look away. I asked Dunmore why she bothered with angles. He said she had told him wolves were only pictures of what you feared, and you had to break them into pieces before you could see them plain.
Last night the blue blade slid off its nail in the wheelhouse, and I caught it before it went over the side. Holding it under the lamp, I saw the blue wolf looking back at me, steady as a lighthouse. I have put it on the shelf above the kettle. The grey one stays on the cabin wall, where Dunmore's pipe smoke can keep it company.
Write back to the Scarborough post and tell me the gulls are still there. Love, Tom
