Cartoon cat with pink bow on wrist

Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon cat face with a pink bow on its head, drawn with thin dark outlines and blue eyes. Light pink wash fills the bow and cheeks, with the white of the face left unshaded against the skin. The tattoo sits centred on the inner wrist, photographed from above with the hand resting on a light fabric.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody on Tanner Row could agree who had tied the pink bow on Biscuit, but everybody agreed she wore it better than the vicar's wife wore her hat. It was a scrap of satin from a christening hamper, knotted at the crown of her head with more ceremony than any cat deserves, and she carried it the way a magistrate carries his gown, as though the street owed her an apology.

The trouble started on a Tuesday, when Mr Cropper, a ginger tom who slept on the bins behind the chemist, decided the warm sill of Hallam's bakery was his. Biscuit had sat there every morning since the spring. She did not hiss or growl. She simply stared at him with her round blue eyes until he remembered an urgent appointment elsewhere, which in his case usually meant a nap.

By the second week he had grown bolder and tried to pull the bow loose with one paw while she dozed. Biscuit woke, rose without haste, and walked the length of the wall to the chemist's drainpipe, where the rain had turned the gutter into a small waterfall. She sat beneath it and let the water run over her head until the satin hung limp and dark. Then she shook herself dry, ribbon and all, and strolled back to the sill.

Mr Cropper never did get the sill back. Dennis, the baker's apprentice, with flour on his cheeks and a soft spot for stubbornness, began leaving a saucer of milk on the step each morning, and each morning there was a small white cat already waiting beside it, bow straight, whiskers dry, as if the rain had never happened.
